Demonstrating an ability to work sensitively and respectfully with Aboriginal communities, recognising their unique cultural perspectives and needs, is essential. You are expected to approach all clients with empathy, a non-judgemental attitude, and cultural sensitivity. Your management and leadership style should be empathetic and supportive, through empowering and trusting your team to deliver on clear and realistic expectations.

Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counsellor – Maternity Leave Relief

Part-time, maternity leave relief until September 2026

Support individuals on their recovery journey while working in a collaborative, values-led community organisation.

West Coast Youth and Community Support (WCYCS) is seeking a qualified and compassionate Alcohol and Other Drug Counsellor to provide maternity leave cover within our Counselling and Support team. Based in Port Lincoln, this role delivers crucial therapeutic support to people across the Eyre Peninsula.

About the Role

This is a maternity leave relief position through to September 2026. You will provide therapeutic counselling, clinical assessments, and support to individuals impacted by substance use. The role includes one-on-one counselling, group facilitation through our Healing Circle Day Centre, and building coordinated care pathways with other services.

Key responsibilities include

· Delivering evidence-based AOD counselling with a focus on harm minimisation and recovery

· Facilitating group sessions and structured activities at the Healing Circle Day Centre

· Using K5 and other tools to assess and monitor client progress

· Working with families, GPs, schools and referral partners to support client wellbeing

· Maintaining accurate client records and contributing to program reporting

About You

You are values-driven, client-focused, and experienced in AOD or mental health counselling. You bring warmth and professionalism to your practice, along with a strong ability to work both independently and within a team environment.

You will have

· A tertiary qualification in social work, counselling, psychology or nursing

· Experience supporting clients with substance use or mental health challenges

· A trauma-informed, culturally responsive approach

· DHS Working with Children Check, First Aid Certificate and a current driver’s licence

· Availability to work between 7am and 8pm (Monday to Friday), if required

Team Leader Counselling

Port Lincoln

$48.14 – $51.25 per hour

Are you a skilled and compassionate leader ready to make a real difference in people's lives? We're on the lookout for a dedicated Team Leader to head our Counselling Service in the Port Lincoln area. This is your chance to lead a dynamic team, provide critical support to individuals and families, and drive meaningful change in our community.

Individuals must have at least 2 years experience in relevant practice and team leadership to be considered for this position. 

About the Program 

The Alcohol and Drug Support program provides support for Drug and Alcohol misuse and mental health and wellness recovery. The program creates a foundation for integrated, community led program delivery that is well supported, understands and meets our local needs and promotes innovation and collaboration with key partners through federal and state government and non-government supports, with key principals of reducing the impact and costs associated with Drug and Alcohol misuse and mental ill heath by providing a collaborative program that is strength based, has the needs of individuals, their families and wider community and society to at the heart of the project.   

In addition to our face-to-face counselling service, we run the Healing Circle Day Centre from Mallee Park three days of the week. The Healing Circle model provides support for Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal people for AOD misuse and promotes positive mental health recovery through group therapy and connection. 

Position overview

The Team Leader is responsible for the implementation, leadership and integration of the adult and youth counselling services in order for the programs to meet their objectives.  This position has a particular focus on leading and mentoring program staff, applying professional knowledge and support whilst providing direct services and managing complex client work.

 Key qualifications & experience

  • Qualified, Social Worker, Nurse, Psychologist, Counsellor, or similar with experience in drug and alcohol support. 

  • Minimum two years’ experience in relevant practice and team leadership.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills encompassing report writing, case note writing and supervision and the ability to communicate effectively with managers, staff and stakeholders across a range of diverse cultural groups and settings.

  • Experience in working with people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) and Aboriginal /Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) backgrounds

  • Experience working within a harm minimisation framework and delivery of therapeutic services

  • Must have relevant Working with Children screening check in place

  • Hold a current C Class Driver’s License 

  • Current First Aid Certificate 

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor Counselling and Healing Circle Teams

  • Responsibilities will include the provision of a responsive, strength-based AOD counselling service for individuals and their families or carers.

  • Ability to program and facilitate AOD group sessions

  • Provide a range of clinical and counselling interventions to assist clients to change risk behaviours and increase their capacity to effectively manage the difficulties they are experiencing that are associated with problematic AOD use that promote recovery

  • Link people to places- an awareness and networks for harm minimization and rehabilitation service within a clinical framework

  • Delivery of out of hours services
